The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches

by Sangu Mandanna

About this book

Mika Moon has spent her entire life following a single, lonely rule: hide her magic. As one of the few witches in Britain, she stays under the radar, finding comfort only in the secret online videos she posts to satisfy her longing for connection. But when an mysterious invitation arrives, Mika breaks her own code of conduct and travels to the remote Nowhere House to tutor three young, volatile witches.

This urban fantasy is the ultimate literary hug, blending whimsical magic with the deep emotional resonance of a found-family story. Nowhere House is a sanctuary of eccentric personalities, from a grumpy, protective librarian named Jamie to a retired actor and two devoted caretakers. As Mika teaches her charges to embrace their powers, she discovers that the isolation she once thought was a safety net was actually a prison.

The slow-burn romance between Mika and the prickly, infuriatingly charming Jamie adds a delicious layer of tension to this cozy tale. If you are searching for a paranormal romance that feels like a warm blanket, look no further. This story is a beautiful, witty exploration of belonging, proving that sometimes the best families are the ones we choose for ourselves.

A hug in book form

October 12, 2022

This is a hug in book form. It is wonderfully cozy and full of diverse characters with all the found family feels you could hope for. Mika Moon is one of the few witches in Britain which can be rather lonely. Due to a curse many years ago all witches are orphaned at a young age, and they can't regularly gather in large groups because too much magic in one place can lead to trouble. But, when Mika's \"fake\" videos about being a witch get seen by someone who recognizes what she can actually do,...

Charming fantasy romance

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches is a magical and cozy fantasy novel by Sangu Mandanna. The story follows Mika Moon, a solitary witch who has always been told to hide her magic and stay away from other witches. She follows the rules—except for one thing: she secretly posts “witchy” videos online. When a message arrives asking her to teach three young witches at the mysterious Nowhere House, Mika’s life is turned upside down. She finds herself surrounded by a quirky found...

A delightful, witty, and nearly flawless read

From the very first page, I was charmed by how witty and engaging the prose is. Sangu Mandanna has a real gift with language—her sentences sparkle without ever feeling overdone, and the humor is woven in naturally so that it feels effortless. The premise itself is immediately intriguing: a witch, forced by lifelong rules to live alone and hide her nature, suddenly finds herself drawn into a remote home where she must teach three young witches to control their magic. What begins as a simple task...

Not My Cup of Tea

October 8, 2025

This book was selected by my book club for our October read. From the outset, I will say that this is not my usual genre of choice, but I was ready for a fun, witchy, magical sort of tale. I did like very much the way the author created the world of witches in the story and The Rules they had to live by. She was consistent with her magical, fantastical realm. I did not, however, enjoy the story all that much because it did not have enough going on. I kept waiting for something big to happen and...

A very nice, flirtatious romance with a great plot.

This was my first book by Sangu. I enjoyed the plot and the twists. I found myself smiling and even laughing out loud. Saying “I knew it!”. It’s a story mainly about the magic and the girls. Jamie & Mika’s story just happened to be a great subplot. Like many of my books, I finished it in just 1 day. It was a nice light read that left me with a good feeling! ) 8 people found this helpful
