Tensions are reaching a boiling point in the latest chapter of the Anita Blake saga, blending high-stakes supernatural investigation with the intense, simmering dynamics of a sprawling shifter pride. When a lethal group of shifters arrives in St. Louis with a target on the backs of Anita’s closest allies, the lines between protector and executioner blur. Forced into a corner, Anita must unleash a raw, devastating display of her necromantic power to defend her chosen family and prove that crossing her carries a fatal price.
This installment leans heavily into the dark, gritty paranormal romance genre, stripping away the excess to focus on the fierce loyalty and lethal stakes that define Anita’s world. Fans of complex shifter hierarchies will appreciate the high-tension power plays, while those who crave the "found family" trope will be gripped by the lengths Anita goes to protect her own. It is a sharp, atmospheric expansion of the series that prioritizes the visceral thrill of the hunt over the series' usual extracurricular distractions.
Whether you are a long-time devotee of the series or a newcomer seeking a supernatural thrill ride, this story delivers a punchy, focused narrative. Prepare for a confrontation that resets the boundaries of power and proves that in the shadows of St. Louis, Anita Blake remains the ultimate force to be reckoned with.

I am a huge Anita Blake fan. That said, I realized that this was a short story (like Micah), before I purchased it. Anyone who has been reading the series should have realized that this was just a short story, and will be followed with a new full length book this Summer. Honestly, I enjoyed the book. I definitely could have used a bigger Anita Blake \"fix,\" but I knew it was going to be short going into it, so I can't complain. The plot was more than adequate, and it was a very engaging short...

I found this book quite enjoyable. One of the things that has recently started to bug me about the Anita books is the over saturation of sex. It has been bordering overboard, just filler. That's not quite accurate, though because the love Laurelle puts into her writing, her spirit is poured into these sequences of the story, and many of them are important parts of the story for her character's development, and for plot. It is just that there is more to Anita than her hungers, than the men she...

I have read all the Anita Blake books. Some of the recent ones were convoluted. This was was tasty and satisfying. Short, but delicious. The plot made sense. A guy wants his wife raised from the dead and goes to great lengths to force Anita to do so. The new characters are satisfying and fit in with the existing cast. The regulars make a short appearance but the story is not about them. It is about greed and how Anita deals with the effects of that. As always, she kicks ass and picks up a new...

In Laughing Corpse, Anita is asked to raise a ancient zombie by a millionaire. She refuses. He hires thugs to force her with the help of a voodoo priestess. Using a Machete Anita kills two of the thugs and using the power of their deaths to summon an army of zombies to kill her enemies. Her friends arrive at the end to find Anita okay. Laughing Corpse is a...
