Not Always an Angel: Unlocking His Heart, Book 3

by Christi Barth

About this book

Six months ago, Liss Jemison's life was mostly normal. Then a freaking demon crashed her roommate's party and "normal" was replaced by a chaotic, terrifying world filled with half-angels, demons, and way too much evil. Now Liss is the only powerless human among her friends...which makes her an enormous target. And a certain gorgeous grouch of a Nephilim just won’t shut up about it. As the fiercest Nephilim warrior, Zavier Carranza is doing everything he can to prevent the release of the Titans and the overthrowing of Heaven and Hell. His overtime job of keeping Liss safe from demons is proving more and more difficult. What makes it even harder? His inescapable need to kiss her until they're both breathless.

To make matters worse, it's Zavier's fault. They're targeting Liss because of him...and the dark tendrils of the past he thought he'd escaped. Now the apocalypse is breathing down their necks. The literal fate of the world—along with Heaven and Hell—depends on whether Zavier and Liss can break a whole ton of rules to pull off a miracle. It's the worst possible time to fall for each other. Sacrifices will have to be made. Good thing she's not quite as human and powerless as they think...

Because something wholly evil is on its way.

Contains mature themes.

Somewhat funny, intriguing third book in series; easily 3.5 stars rounded to 4

I have looked forward to this book about the snarky couple of Zavier Carranza who is part angel and part human making him a Nephilim and his banter/snark partner all human Liss Jemison. These two met six months ago when both their lives changed with their introduction into the life of the other. After watching her friends Evangeline pair up with Gideon and Maisy meet Rhys, Liss wonders if her bad luck has left her with Zavier. Liss has recently lost her job, met up with the three Nephilim who...

I felt this book started slow but then picked up. It did take a bit for me to fully get into it, but once I did I very much enjoyed it. )

Cute Paranormal Romance

May 19, 2025

Not Always an Angel was a cute paranormal romance read. The primary mythos is the battle between angles and demons and the end of the world from the releasing of the Titans but more magical and fantasy aspects are revealed as the tale evolves. The main characters are well developed and the banter and tension is on point. The diverse cast is fun and keeps the story engaging. While this can be read as a standalone, I feel I would have connected to the story more and felt a little more depth had I...

Rating: 5/5 This third installment in the Nephilim series did not disappoint. In this book, we meet Zavier, a Nephilim, and Liss, a human who has been pulled into the supernatural world thanks to her best friend. Together with their group, they’re on a mission to stop the end of the world, but while the stakes couldn’t be higher, Zavier can’t help but focus on protecting Liss. As a human without obvious supernatural abilities, he believes she’s the most vulnerable member of the team. What...

Fun & Lighthearted

I loved the series Lucifer. I must have watched all the seasons multiple times. Christi Barth’s Not Always An Angel is deemed to be similar to the Lucifer show, and that piqued my interest. It is the third book in an interconnected series. As a non-book-number follower, I was fine reading Book 3 first. I enjoyed the charm and the lightheartedness of Not Always An Angel. Zavier’s character was well-written. I liked his personality and how protective he was with Liss—perfectly matched up with her...
