And So The Breaking Begins: Mindbreaker Duet, Book 1 (An Age of War and Prophecy 3)

by Angela Roquet
It's a hard-knock afterlife… Lana Harvey is a reaper, and a lousy one at that. She resides in Limbo City, the modern capital of the collective afterlives, where she likes to stick it to the man (the legendary Grim Reaper himself) by harvesting the bare minimum of souls required of her. She’d much rather be hanging out with Gabriel, her favorite archangel, at Purgatory Lounge. But when a shocking promotion falls in Lana's lap, she learns something that could unravel the very fabric of Eternity. If the job isn’t completed, there could be some real hell to pay.
New to Lana and Limbo City?
If you love urban fantasy steeped in mythology, dark humor, gritty action, and paranormal romance, then buckle up, buttercup! You're in for one hell of a ride...
This series is complete at 7 books (plus a short story collection and illustrated guide) but you can catch up with Lana and the gang in LIFE AFTER DEATH, book one of the RETURN TO LIMBO CITY spin-off series!

The grim reaper has been done before, so it's hard not to compare this character, Lana Harvey, with other author's interpretations. For example, I love the character of Charley Davidson in Darynda Jones' series First Grave on the Right, etc..., but that character is pretty much set in our world, with other worldly beings popping in and out. What Ms. Roquet has done is to create another world, one wholly inhabited by otherworldly characters, among whom the reapers make appearances in our world...

As my first foray reading Roquet’s novels, I must admit that this was a delightfully amusing read. Fans of Darynda Jones will want to check this series out. Lana’s not your average Reaper. She’s sarcastic, prone to breaking the rules, and a bit of a slacker. Yet at the same time she’s loyal to her friends, willing to fight for what she believes in, and can kick some serious butt when necessary. She’s someone I’d love to hang out with if given the chance. Gabriel, Maalik, and Josie were...

Quick summary at the top: overall, this is a fun, light read with a few really fun characters and a few flat ones. If you want some cool world-building and interesting set-up for a longer series, this book's for you. I'd call this a 3.5/5 overall. Now to go a little more in depth. I'll try to avoid spoilers, but be warned there MAY be some ahead. No real specifics, but still! So, I received this book for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. I'm not usually an urban fantasy...

I liked GRAVEYARD SHIFT very much. It was a rollicking ride into an imaginary world where grim reapers hang out with archangels in the Purgatory Lounge in a place called Limbo City. If that doesn't grab your paranormal attention, what will? Oh, and I rarely comment on this, but I liked the cover a lot, too! In fact, the cover grabbed my attention before I even read the title. As an author, I know that world-building is very tough and whatever you do in the first book lays the foundation for...

I love this series. I had read this book way back in 2016 or around there. I can count on one hand how many books I ever reread. There’s too many on my tbr list to ever read books over. However, this is one that always sticks in my mind. Love the world! This time, I listened to the audiobook. So much fun. I pretty much listened in one night at work. The characters are interesting. The series gets more involved and interesting as the books go along. I still haven’t read the last few so I can’t...
