For eight hundred years, Julian has been Death.
Not a metaphor. Not a condition. A function — precise, complete, and entirely without feeling. He moves through New Orleans like weather, present and unnoticed, doing what he has always done. He does not wonder. He does not want. He does not stay.
Then he meets Mara Voss.
She is a homicide detective who has sensed death her entire life — not as an abstraction but as a presence at the edge of every room, every case, every loss she has learned to absorb and keep moving through. She has built her life around that awareness. She has never met the thing itself.
When their worlds collide in the streets of New Orleans, something shifts in Julian that eight centuries of existence have not managed to produce. He begins to notice. He begins to stay. And for a being whose entire architecture is built on function without feeling, noticing is the most dangerous thing that has ever happened to him.
Death Fell First is a literary paranormal romance set against the atmospheric backdrop of New Orleans — a city that has always known how to hold the living and the dead in the same breath. It is a story about what happens when an immortal being encounters the one thing his existence has never prepared him for: the specific, irreversible weight of caring whether someone lives.
For readers of Alix E. Harrow, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and Deborah Harkness — a love story told at the pace of inevitability, between a man who has seen everything and a woman who has survived it.

Death Fell First by Evan Ashcroft is one of those books that pulls you in fast and doesn’t really let go. The tension builds so well, and just when you think you have a handle on what’s going on, it completely shifts direction in a way you don’t see coming. The characters feel real, which makes the story even more engaging. Definitely a 5-star read if you’re into twisty, fast-paced thrillers. )

This book caught my attention with its compelling premise- paranormal romance combined with mystery and set in New Orleans (a city I love for its stories and history and where the living and the dead seem to coexist). Looking forward to reading more! )
