Reread Update: I still love this book! The magical worldbuilding is a lot, but hang in there because it's a great story. Petra is a sweeper, cleaning up mages' magical waste. Every time a mage does magic, they create dross, which causes bad luck and leads to accidents. She doesn't love her place in society because mages look down on sweepers since they can't actually do magic, but she is content with her life. Her job is essential because magic needs balance. good series start

3.5 rounded up. Took a long time to set up the world, but it’s interesting and unique, if a tad awkward at times. Also took a while to fluff out the characters, but the momentum picks up well, I like the MC and her Pluck, and I expect the next one to be amazing. ) One person found this helpful

5 Star start to a new series

Kim Harrison’s writing is at top form in this new series. There was a lot of information that had to be introduced in the first 50 or so pages, but it was done well and organically. There weren’t any huge surprises or plot twists that couldn’t be figured out, but I don’t think they were designed to be big aha moments and the storyline remained interesting and engaging and the action fast-paced.
