Black Ambrosia (Paperbacks from Hell)

by Elizabeth Engstrom

About this book

Angelina looks like the quintessential student, blending perfectly into the halls of academia with her unassuming charm and quiet grace. But beneath her soft exterior lies a predatory hunger that defies conventional vampire lore. Guided by a seductive, internal Voice, she does not hunt out of malice or bloodlust; she kills out of a twisted, obsessive form of love. For Angelina, every victim is a recipient of a final, lethal grace, a dark gift that promises eternal peace at the devastating cost of their soul.

This cult classic is a masterclass in psychological horror, blending the grounded, unsettling realism of American Psycho with the haunting, existential dread of George A. Romero’s Martin. It subverts the traditional paranormal romance by stripping away the glitter and romanticism of the vampire myth, replacing them with a chilling, intimate portrait of a monster who views her own carnage as a holy mission.

If you are tired of sparkly, star-crossed lovers and are craving a darker, more visceral take on the genre, this is the ultimate read. It is a queasy, mesmerizing descent into the mind of a killer that will leave you questioning everything you think you know about the predator hiding in plain sight.

A queasy - and deeply effective - blend of Martin and American Psycho

I've struggled a little to figure out how to describe Elizabeth Engstrom's Black Ambrosia, a vampire novel in the vein (ugh) of the film Martin, only narrated by its monster in a style that's closer to American Psycho than Interview with a Vampire. Angelica is an unusual girl from the moment we meet her - indeed, even though we're immersed in her perspective from the first words of the book (mostly - more on that in a moment), it's clear that she's...off, in some way - disconnected from normal...

Is She or Isn't She?

BLACK AMBROSIA is exactly what I hoped it would be, plus some. Here's the synopsis: \"Angelina is a killer. You'd never know it to look at her--until you look into her eyes. Angelina doesn't kill out of hatred or fear--she kills out of love, bringing solace to her victims, guided by the seductive Voice that speaks only to her. Angelina offers you eternal peace--at the cost of your soul!\" Quiet horror is more to my liking these days, and this book fits the bill. Don't get me wrong, violent and...

The PAPERBACKS FROM HELL Edition: The book is beautifully recreated by Valancourt Books, retaining the original text and cover art by legendary illustrator Bob Eggleton. Better paper stock all but guarantees a sturdier book than previous printings. The introduction by Grady Hendrix is illuminating and well-conceived. $16.99 may seem a hefty price-tag, but Valancourt generally prices its books in that range to insure quality—and they deliver. The Novel: Here is the story of young Angelina...
