Affliction: An Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Novel

by Laurell K. Hamilton

About this book

Anita Blake returns to her roots in this gripping installment of the long-running urban fantasy series. As a professional animator who makes her living raising the dead, Anita is no stranger to the supernatural, but a terrifying new plague is defying every rule she has ever known. When a mysterious, fast-acting zombie virus begins an aggressive spread, it threatens to collapse the fragile balance between humanity and the monsters lurking in the shadows.

The stakes become deeply personal when Micah’s estranged father falls victim to the rot, leaving Anita and her inner circle scrambling for a cure before the disease consumes him entirely. This narrative masterfully blends the high-stakes thrills of a paranormal investigation with the intense, complicated romance that fans of the series crave. It is a dark, visceral journey that forces Anita to confront the limits of her own power while navigating the treacherous politics of the vampire and shapeshifter underworlds.

With its return to the gritty, mystery-driven atmosphere of the earlier novels, this book is a perfect pick for readers who love their paranormal romance layered with brutal action and supernatural suspense. Whether you are a longtime devotee or a newcomer looking for a pulse-pounding gothic adventure, this story delivers everything you need.

Affliction - Book 22 of series

One of my top five favorite Anita Blake books! I love that LKH got back to Anita's animator roots with this one - nothing like a good zombie raising to get the blood pumping! I especially enjoyed the twists to the story that tie her characters even closer together. More of Micah's background is exposed (he's never been a favorite character, but I like him a bit more now, and there's some excellent future potential introduced). There are a lot of new things uncovered in her current...

A pleasant surprise

Finally, a return to the style of writing that can be found in Ms. Hamilton's earlier books. Though still not as well developed as some of her earlier works in terms of plot, subplots, character and scene development (e.g., \"Guilty Pleasures,\" \"The Laughing Corpse,\" etc.), and the ending in this book continues to be almost as abrupt as in her more recent works, it's a decent read. The bad porn and lengthy descriptions of gore and destruction are short, few, and far between. While I...

Much Better: reminds me of the early books

I read that first review and heard the book was a hot mess, but except for the delusional author photo on the back cover, the book is one of the best ones she has written in years. It is a tight well written procedural that takes us back to the things we liked about the Anita Blake series. Anita is happy and realizing when her emotional baggage is interfering with her job and relationships. Micah's mother calls Anita and tells him his father has been bitten by a zombie and is dying. She...

I really enjoyed this installment of Anita Blake. I really enjoy the books featuring Edward. I like the characters and their development. So glad to finally meet Mica's family. Hamilton is a superb author and I am grateful she shares her stories. Thank You! Oh, this is perhaps my seventh time reading along while listening to this series. Top marks to the narrator! )
