A Bloom in Winter

by J.R. Ward

About this book

Decades of imprisonment and trauma have left Apex, a lethal vampire assassin, convinced that his chance at happiness died long ago. He has spent his existence in the shadows, numbed by the memory of the one soul who truly mattered: a wolven named Callum. Their past was shattered by a brutal abduction, leaving both men to survive as broken, drifting loners in a world that feels increasingly cold.

When their paths finally collide again in the frozen landscape of upstate New York, the magnetic pull between them is undeniable. This gripping urban fantasy blends high-stakes danger with a tender second-chance romance, forcing these two scarred men to confront the ghosts of their history. As a treasonous plot to overthrow the King threatens the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Apex and Callum must decide if they are brave enough to fight for a future together.

J.R. Ward delivers a masterclass in emotional salvation, weaving a story of found-family and resilience. For fans of paranormal romance, this is a heart-wrenching yet hopeful tale of two souls navigating the darkness to find their way home. If you crave intense chemistry and a narrative that heals old wounds, this winter escape is your next must-read.

Loved the closure!

First of all, this book cover is gorgeous! When I read the Lair of the Wolven series, I was left needing to know what happened to Callum and Apex. JR Ward wrote other books, and I thought maybe we would never find out. Luckily, I was wrong, and I am so happy I was. This book was amazing! I read it after reading Lover Forbidden because I just couldn't wait to read LF. Had I read this book first, I would have been introduced to the Whestmorel issue earlier. Still, it didn't really affect my...

Salvation

August 15, 2025

This book was truly a story of salvation. The main characters were broken, needing to find their way back to each other after an horrific past. The plot against the King, the love story taking place, it all meshed well together, keeping the reader engaged. Well written, but I do have to reread certain phrases that may be colloquialism. )

Good story

I love the writing style of JR Ward. Thanks for the update on the kids and introduction of new characters. It was nice that she tied in some of the main characters with the story. I also appreciated the tie in of the first chapter and the last one. Absolutely perfect. )

Just so sweet

I would recommend this book to anyone LGBTQ+ and friends. It was actually very beautiful, the story, along with all the fun adventure and fighting we all want in a Black Dagger novel. A beautiful and heart breaking roller coaster of a story. Don't be judgy, keep an open mind if you're straight, I am, and still very much choked up and enjoyed. A little rushed with the secondary romance, but a good wrap up for the \"prison\" crew. )

OUTSTANDING

March 6, 2025

With a series that has lasted this long, how JR Ward continues to do this over and over is beyond me. I know she’s an outstanding author, but to keep me drawn in after all these books take a genius. Everything you could want in an outstanding book is in this book.. This book is about Apex and Callen, and also about Mayhem and Mahrci. A couple from the past that have suffered such horrific things manages to start coming out on the other side to find his perfect mate. And a new couple that never...
