It's not often Book 3 of a series surpasses the first couple of novels, but for me, this has been the best book of the Ruin series so far. This author has always been a five star read for me as well as being a automatic one-click and I've read pretty much all of her work (and reread them many times). This series improves with every book, the more it moves away from the basic fairy tale and does Breene’s own thing of adventure, power and fantasy. It’s just as gripping even with the seeming plot downers of imprisonment and a missing hero for most of the book. Breene shows how she can build an epic victory and great characters without slow exposition or grimness while in the doldrums. A few parts stand out. Alright, when I first started book one, it was a droll. Over 30 pages (or so?) about the care of everlass plants; yawn. But I persevered through that drag, and here we are at book 3. New characters are introduced in this installment, and most are a welcomed addition. But fan favorites have much more air time, and play large roles to driving the plot forward, and it is superb! I hope Finley and company keep finding themselves in danger so my boy Hadriel gets dragged along on their adventures!...

As much as I was disappointed with the last book, I was impressed with the storyline in this book. So, *****spoilers***** let’s recap books 1 & 2 Finley is just a poor girl in a poor kingdom that has been hit hard by a curse from the Demon King.
