Twelve-year-old Bu is an unwanted daughter with nothing to her name but a pair of thick glasses and a desperate need to pass an audition at a prestigious music academy. Her world is small and precarious, until she forms an unlikely bond with YinYin, a mysterious student who seems to possess a non-human grace. Within the hallowed, ivy-covered walls of the academy, the girls find a sanctuary where music is more than just melody; it is a force capable of banishing demons and bending reality itself.
This enchanting urban fantasy weaves a spell of atmospheric world-building and high-stakes adventure. When warships arrive to demand tribute, the girls are ripped from their studies and thrust into the heart of a volatile empire. They quickly learn that in a realm where music is a weapon, they are the most valuable pieces on the board. As the lines between the human world and the transcendent blur, Bu must navigate a dangerous new reality where power comes at a terrible cost.
Perfect for fans of immersive academy tropes and ghostly mysteries, this story explores the thin, shimmering veil between the living and the spectral. It is a lyrical, unpredictable journey about finding one’s voice in a world of shadows.

Kindle has brought us so many great storytellers. I deeply admire the imagination and persistence that brings us so many great stories. A very lowly girl, half blind is sent off to a chance at a musician's apprenticeship. She is swept up in a tribute to Imperial forces. Her talent and decency puts her in a position to influence the outcome of war. That really doesn't...

In this mystical world where music moves people and destroys demons, our near sighted heroine humbly reigns supreme. Clothing details, sights, light, dark, emotions, and personalities come to life… oh, yeah, music plays a part also I never ever say a book is a must read. MR’s are too personal. But you could do worse than this book. Not a waste of your time. ) 2 people found this helpful
