by C.J. Archer
Hannah Smith has spent her entire life hidden away in an attic, serving as a companion to an earl’s daughter. While she is grateful for a roof over her head, her existence is defined by isolation and the mystery surrounding their confinement. Everything shifts when she is violently kidnapped by Jack Langley, a charismatic man with a dangerous secret. Taken to the infamous Freak House, Hannah finds herself trapped in a world of supernatural anomalies and forced proximity with a group of outcasts, including a mad scientist and a man who can command fire.
This enchanting paranormal romance masterfully blends historical Gothic atmosphere with a slow-burn tension that keeps you turning pages. As Hannah navigates her new reality among these gifted misfits, she realizes they have made a grave mistake: they believe she is the noblewoman they intended to abduct. The dark-romance undertones simmer beneath the surface, raising the stakes as Hannah hides her true identity while falling deeper into a world where her own mysterious narcolepsy might be more than it seems.
If you are looking for your next captivating supernatural obsession, this story delivers a perfect balance of suspense, magic, and budding intimacy. You will not be able to put it down.

C.j. Archer has created a world...

I've been reading C.J. Archer's The Ministry of Curiosities series and decided to pick this up since I've been enjoying that series and this one seemed similar. They are actually very similar and I'm pretty sure that they are supposed to be taking place in the same world around the same time in a supernatural Victorian London. In fact, I do believe that another of Archer's series, the Emily Chambers Spirit Medium trilogy, is referenced in this book. So, if you like either of those series, read...

The reason? The Earl’s daughter, Violet, can apparently start fires with her hands. Like, from her fingertips. Weird, right? And the orphan girl, Hannah, is a narcoleptic which means that she has unexplained bouts of unconsciousness. So, one day Hannah gets kidnapped right out of the Earl’s garden...

Although this was a good book, I probably won't be continuing the series. This is mostly due to the pacing of the story and the way in which the author chose to tell it... literally. Too much conversation for my taste. Way, way too much conversation. The first several chapters were excellent, and I had high hopes that the rest of the book would be equally action-filled and compelling. Well... action-filled, no. Compelling? If you don't mind characters verbally discussing mysteries, meeting upon...
