The Remnant

by Linda Gordon Boroff

About this book

Set against the sun-drenched, redwood-shadowed backdrop of 1970s California, Dar Beaumont is desperately trying to curate the perfect life. As a young bride to an ambitious district attorney, she struggles to shed the weight of a troubled past and quiet the whispers of her own insecurity. But in the coastal town of San Marcos, perfection is a fragile mask, and Dar is hiding a secret far more dangerous than the bottles of gin stashed away in her cupboards.

Dar has lived her entire life haunted by The Remnant, a spectral presence from a long-dead soul that occupies the corners of her consciousness. As a string of gruesome serial killings terrorizes the local community, the line between her own anxiety and a genuine paranormal threat begins to blur. A sinister, prehistoric-looking stalker emerges from the shadows, and Dar finds herself caught in a terrifying battle for control as The Remnant demands more of her life than she can afford to give.

This haunting ghost story masterfully blends noir atmosphere with the high-stakes tension of a second-chance narrative. Boroff weaves a mesmerizing, surreal tale where the ghosts of the past aren't just memories—they are predators. It is a chilling exploration of obsession, possession, and the desperate fight to reclaim one’s own identity before the darkness consumes everything.

Santa Cruz noir meets obsession, possession

August 4, 2020

At turns both humorous and surreal, Boroff's latest novel is a mesmerizing tale of a young woman's fight to protect herself from a troubled carnie's physical stalking and ultimately, his spiritual possession. Dar's inevitable descent into alcoholism is particularly realistic in its disturbing depiction. Boroff paints with both wide and pointillist literary brushes, deftly rendering for us the horrific in the ordinary and the lightness in the macabre. ) One person found this helpful

Sometimes we make the very things we fear happen

September 10, 2020

Linda Boroff's writing on this unsettling novella was engaging and more than a little disturbing as the protagonist falls deeper into her own self-generated fears. The young woman in pursuit of perfect marital happiness ironically travels in the exact opposite direction. Sometimes we make the very things we fear happen when we try too hard for perfection. ) One person found this helpful

Dark, Funny, Smart…

…and riveting. We’re drawn into the life of a beautiful, complicated young wife and her handsome, ambitious husband as they begin a new life in a new town. Indelible characters and a story tinged with the surreal make this a great read. It’s filled with sly, self-aware humor and painfully familiar human frailty. Highly recommended. )
