The Midnight Test (Rite World: Lightgrove Witches Book 1)

by Juliana Haygert

About this book

Hazel is a witch who has long accepted her status as the weakest of her generation. Content to trade high-stakes spellcasting for a quiet life as a ghost hunter, she is perfectly happy keeping her distance from the magical elite. However, her carefully constructed normalcy shatters when the prestigious Lightgrove Coven offers her a rare, high-stakes invitation: pass a lethal test on Friday the Thirteenth, or lose the chance to join their ranks forever.

The stakes escalate when Hazel crosses paths with Sean, a mysterious and inexplicably alluring human. While she tries to focus on her dangerous trial, she finds herself drawn into a whirlwind of chemistry and peril. As their fates intertwine, Hazel realizes that her path to belonging is far more complicated than she anticipated. She must decide if the power of the coven is worth the risk of losing herself—and the man who has managed to break through her defenses.

Blending supernatural suspense with the warmth of a found-family dynamic, this paranormal romance is a spellbinding start to a new series. If you love ghost-filled mysteries, high-tension magical trials, and slow-burn chemistry, this journey into the heart of Lightgrove is your next obsession.

Far better than I was expecting

October 29, 2024

The action started almost from the beginning. The young witch is interrupted while trying to banish a ghost by a representative of the nearby prestigious Lightgrove coven. The characters, both main and supporting are all interesting. Romance is an issue, as well as the main protagonist feeling she is far too weak a witch to be seriously considered. The plot is easily followed and the premise is the main witch deciding whether she is worthy to go through the training to join the Lightgrove coven...

Dark tidings in New Orleans...

(rounded up from 3.5) I previously met Hazel, Sean and the Lightgrove Witches in the short story \"Tested\" - which this is expanded from. I enjoyed the taste of the world and meeting Hazel as she's caught between wanting to be a witch and wanting to be a human. A choice made easier before the events of this book, as she's pretty weak so no big powerful coven would take her seriously. If indeed she wanted them to, as mostly she keeps trying to keep her mother happy. Hazel is young, 18 and just...

Needed More

Hazel's family is one of the weakest in the coven, and Hazel is the weakest witch in her family. She had come to terms with living as a human with a ghost-banishing hobby. That's why she chose to go to college in New Orleans. But now the illustrious Lightgrove Coven has agreed to give her a chance to join the coven if she can pass their ghost banishing test on Friday the 13th. Hazel has a plan in place but she never expected Sean, a classmate, to show up at the haunted mansion she's at, along...

She thought she was a weak witch but she wasn’t. She surprised the witches council and the dark witch that tried to kill her. )

Good Stuff!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I have read & I love the entire Rite World series. This one did not disappoint, & I can't wait for book 2. While I'm way too old for Ms Haygert's target audience (63), I still really enjoy her writing. Great stories, & the main characters become real. In this one, Hazel is a young witch who hasn't really fit in anywhere. Teens on the punk rock side will relate to her. Before the book is over, she gains a large...
