The Archivist's Curse (The Rootbound Bride 1)

by Luna Asli Kolcu

About this book

Elisabeth Hargrove arrives at the crumbling, sentient estate of Aldermere Hall not as a willing wife, but as a woman on a mission. Bound by a three-century-old arranged marriage, she is expected to become the twelfth bride to grace the portrait gallery. Yet, Elisabeth is an archivist by trade; she sees the secrets hidden between the lines of history and carries the forbidden sketchbook of her predecessor to prove it.

The house is a predator dressed in elegance, where white roses bloom in the frost and portraits smile with haunting uniformity. As Elisabeth navigates the chilling mysteries of the estate, she finds an unexpected ally in the estate’s gardener. Their connection forms the heart of a slow-burn romance that simmers beneath the surface of this gothic nightmare. It is a fragile, literary dance between two strangers caught in a curse that has never once let a bride escape.

Perfect for fans of atmospheric, dark fairy tales, this story weaves poetic prose with a tension that lingers long after the final page. If you crave a paranormal romance where the house itself is a character and every shadow holds a secret, step inside Aldermere Hall. Just be warned: the house has a way of keeping what it wants.

Kolcu has crafted a world that invites you in to sit by the fire, and before you know it, it’s enveloped you in its spell and you never want to leave, because the story commands your full attention. With an immersive richness reminiscent of heavyweights like Tolkien and Le Guin, Kolcu leaves no dust mote unexplained and no thought merely passing or trivial. You will understand the characters as much as you will understand the roses. There is a density to this story and feels constricting at...

4.5☆ Intrigue. Kolcu has crafted a series full of gothic intrigue. Her writing is poetic with descriptions unlike any other writer. Kolcu's words pull the reader in while at the same time lulling the senses. The Archivist's Curse is the first book in The Rootbound Bride series. I recommend reading the prequel, The Fifth Bride, before reading this novel. It isn't absolutely necessary but it may make the reader's understanding of events more clear. It seems strange that the series begins at the...
