Miss Penny, the well-beloved schoolmistress of Asterton, has two unique abilities. One is the ability to conjure the spirits of the dead through the playing of her piano. The other is to communicate telepathically with her cat, Onyx.

When the irascible Lord Blackwood is murdered while out riding his horse, all signs point to his hot-tempered nephew and heir, Anthony, being the murderer. Convinced he doesn't have it in him to commit murder, Miss Penny works behind the scenes to solve the mystery. As she does so, she is ably assisted by Onyx, the affable local rector and an eighteenth-century ghost named Lady Caroline that she befriends.
