A Forever Unrooting of Jade and Hickory (The Rooted Realm)

by Morgan Dante
Betrayed by a kiss and abandoned by the divine, Judas Iscariot finds himself cast into the frozen desolation of the ninth circle. While the Harrowing of Hell offers salvation to others, Judas is left behind to rot in the company of the ultimate outcast: the Devil himself. What begins as a cold, callous dynamic between two of history’s greatest villains slowly curdles into an unexpected, haunting intimacy.
This dark romance reimagines the eternal hierarchy of the underworld through a lens of lush, gothic longing. As centuries bleed into one another, the narrative explores the intersection of religious trauma and forbidden devotion, turning the concept of damnation into a sanctuary for two broken souls. It is a slow-burn exploration of companionship found in the shadow of God, where the most detestable traitors discover that the only thing worse than Hell is facing it alone.
Drawing inspiration from the rich, complex tapestry of The Divine Comedy, this queer paranormal tale is as sacrilegious as it is profoundly moving. Readers seeking a deeply atmospheric, heart-wrenching journey will find themselves captivated by this provocative subversion of biblical lore. Prepare for a masterpiece of melancholic beauty that proves even in the deepest abyss, love can be the most dangerous—and redemptive—sin of all.

I loved how The Saint of Heartbreak expounds upon familiar biblical lore. The characters felt fleshed out beyond the original text and made into something unique to this book. The relationship between the Judas and the Devil is complicated, especially by Judas' traumas. How can a man damned to eternal mourning ever hope for a better future? He sinks so far into himself that it starts to test even the Devil's apathy, and, at times, my patience. It takes a long time for his personality to start...

It was good. I’ll probably read the novellas… it did seem like there was something missing, mainly with the world building. Was there a book before this that I missed? How it’s written, there seems to be whole story plots that predate this book that are just laid out in a brief sentence like we should have known about it before. )

This one is up there with The Song of Achilles for me—I know that’s a HUGE statement to make, but god (no pun intended) is it true!!! This is my first Morgan Dante book, and I do not foresee it being my last. I am in love with everything from the cover to the ingenious concept to the gorgeous prose. I gasped multiple times while reading this book because it genuinely took my breath away. I wish I could read it again for the first time. What a gift. )
