A Forever Unrooting of Jade and Hickory (The Rooted Realm)

Sebastian Sica is a man defined by his isolation. Operating on the fringes of the Catholic Church, this stoic, trans priest spends his nights hunting the darkness that plagues the American South. When a routine exorcism at a fraternity house goes sideways, he strikes a dangerous bargain with a powerful demon named Berith: one night of intimacy in exchange for the demon leaving his human host. What begins as a transactional sacrifice quickly spirals into a haunting, atmospheric dance between two souls who have long forgotten how to be human.
As Berith begins to haunt Sebastian’s every waking moment, their relationship transforms from a forced arrangement into a tender, fragile connection. Amidst rainy nights in neon-lit diners and the quiet weight of shared trauma, they find solace in one another’s repression. However, their growing bond does not go unnoticed. When Berith’s master in the hell-realms discovers the betrayal, the pair must fight to protect a love that defies the laws of both heaven and earth.
This angsty, character-driven paranormal romance is a masterclass in mood and longing. With haunting prose and a slow-burn intensity, it explores the intersection of faith, identity, and the shadows we keep. For those seeking an emotionally resonant story where the line between salvation and damnation blurs, this is an unforgettable, soul-stirring read.

I'm going to have a hard time reviewing this one, because absolutely nothing I can tell you will do it justice. Have you ever immediately started a book and just fell in love with the prose? Before the characters were even known to me I was in love with this book because it was beautiful and captivating and haunting and just truly, truly perfect. And then, I met the characters, and I fell even harder. I said many times while reading that Morgan should just directly @ me next time, because I so...

“You are haunted by the impermanence of everything you do.” This is an emotionally devastating and surprisingly tender story of a trans man masquerading as a priest (sort of?) on his own terms and a demon, Berith, who doesn’t want to leave him be. “He can never forget that he’s dealing with a demon, no matter how he has learned to pity them because nothing is sadder than being abandoned by God.” I love Sebastian and Berith as characters and all their flaws within them. Sebastian really...

The concept of this was intriguing, but the execution didn’t really work for me. It was technically a short read, but it felt double the size. And not in a good way. There was so much talking. Just as something interesting would happen, there would be a load of dialogue that would ruin the momentum. The pace was just off. I felt the ache of loneliness and grief, but never felt any chemistry between the main couple. Individually they were interesting, but together there was zero oomph. I could...

First off, I want to preface my review by saying this was a wonderful read. Very respectful of trans identities (as I am also trans) and the allegories are just so perfectly befitting and relatable. I rewrote several lines into a liveblog chat with a fellow trans friend just because I felt so strongly about them and dropped the link to this book for them to purchase one day soon. I will say that my sole critique is that there were a handful of typos throughout the book. Most are negligible — an...

This was so good! I don't generally read religious romance books, but this was very well written. The story was easy to follow and I absolutely loved Sebastian and Berith together. Priest and demon?? YES GIVE ME. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. )
