A tragic midnight phone call shatters MaryAnne Carpenter’s world, thrusting her into the role of guardian for her godchild after the girl’s parents are found dead. What begins as a mission of mercy quickly descends into a chilling nightmare set against the isolated, snow-drenched mountains of Idaho. As MaryAnne moves into the Wilkensons’ remote ranch, she discovers that the death of her friends was no accident, and a predatory evil is stalking the property with calculated precision.
For readers who crave a slow-burn paranormal experience, this story masterfully weaves atmospheric dread with unexpected intensity. While the narrative is rooted in the unsettling tradition of dark romance, the stakes are elevated by the looming threat of the supernatural. The tension builds with agonizing patience, leading to a relentless, high-octane climax that will leave you breathless.
Beyond the suspense, the story excels in its deep character development, forcing you to become emotionally tethered to MaryAnne as she fights to protect her charge. If you are searching for a haunting tale where guardian angels and cold-blooded killers collide, this immersive thriller offers a gripping exploration of love, sacrifice, and the shadows that linger in the most majestic of landscapes.

When the author leaves you wanting more: more about the characters because you have become invested in them, and more about the adventure, because it was an interesting and exciting yarn, she's done her job engaging her reader! If you don't like to take a flight of fancy, don't read this book, because Katie Hines really tells a whopper here, creating a fantasy spun from her imagination and the best threads of Knights Templar Lore. Her characters aren't without their quirks and flaws and fears...

Is it worse than what's in your home? Loved this creepy story. The characters were all so memorable and realistic. He set the scene so you felt you were seeing it with your own eyes. I would not be surprised to see this become a movie one day. )

I really liked this book. It’s probably my 2nd favorite John Saul book (1st being Second Child). Although I didn’t like the portrayal of any child being hurt or killed. I really enjoyed the setting. Another thing I like about this book is how John Saul shows how cruel children can be to each other; something that is quite common. ) One person found this helpful
