This is such an emotional read. Ezekiel and Sam's vulnerability, pain, and angst will just break your heart. Ezekiel, the grumpy member of the unit, was dealing with so much internally. As his layers were slowly revealed, they uncovered not true grumpiness and anger, but someone dealing with so much loneliness and pain. I went into this book a little hesitant, mainly due to Sam’s OCD representation. Mental health, especially something as complex as OCD, is often mishandled in fiction. But I’m happy to say the author did an incredible job portraying Sam with compassion, nuance, and realism. His character never felt reduced to a diagnosis.
